The dating world looks differently today than it did a few years ago, and as many can attest to, it is in a constant state of flux. Whether you're a novice at perusing profiles or a pro, there are lots of options when searching for love online. Whether you're looking for the casual site or the secret diamond club type of site you will discover the positive as well as negative elements to the search for companionship.
The Positive
Without having to waste time sipping sake with the senorita just to discover she hates everything you hold dear to your heart, you can now get ratings in a matter of minutes. Why sour your Saturday night with nonsensical chatter when you can see ahead of time that your dream date is an 80% match with a 10% enemy rating and a 5% chance at being your friend? Whether your strategy involves narrowing your choices by putting age limits, or religious preferences, some are not looking for romance at all, but are seeking networking opportunities and hope to add new acquaintances to their circle of friends.
The Negative
If you have made the leap from the websites to an actual phone call, then you know how precarious it can be to set up the first encounter. And really do you ever truly know for sure if Jack the Ripper or Star the Stripper will emerge on first date? And you thought you knew everyone in your community. Why was it such a surprise to you that the last date looked nothing like their photo? Whether they prove to be who they say they are or not remains to be seen. These are the chances you take, besides, there are couples who after 25 years of marriage discovered they were living with a complete stranger!
Surprising or Not So Surprising Stats
Online dating sites have been a haven for divorcees and more. The 2012 online dating statistics are pretty revealing. In the United States the dating industry is slotted to be bringing in $2.1 billion.[1] By the end of this year there will be approximately 1,500 dating sites in the US alone.[1] The state of Illinois is passing a bill for safety reasons to require these types of sites to do background checks. This bill is similar to ones passed previously in New York and New Jersey. [4] In Australia, out of the 25% who have engaged in online dating, 16% have actually landed long term relationships. [2] In Canada some health experts say that the increase in STDs (specifically chlamydia at it's 66% increase since the year 2000) is because of online dating. Out of the 25% of the Canadians who have tried online dating, 16% admitted to having sex with someone they met online. [3] Believe it or not, Brazil is home to 62 million singles with 5.6 million hitting the online dating sites every month! [5]
