Our latest fan of the month is a guy named Channing Tatum. I try not to judge but what the hell is a name like that doing on a guy? Carol Channing's long lost offspring? Tatum O'Neal's abandoned relative? He says he's an actor, a dancer and a model but if he wants to make it in this business he'd better come up with a better name.
Anyhow, Channing is in his early 30's, lives in the Los Angeles area and says he does a lot of mainstream movies, though I think he's got more of a future in gay porn. He was born in Alabama but moved to Mississippi when he was six. His mom worked for an airline and his dad was in construction which obviously gave him a leg up in the industry. The one thing Tatum loved more than anything else growing up was sit-ups. The thing he loved second-most was ballet. Considering he was in Mississippi, finding a dance class had to be harder than finding an abortion clinic...or a liberal.
His parents moved again, this time to Florida, when Tatum was a teenager. He attended Tampa Catholic High School where he was voted Most Athletic. After graduation and then dropping out of college, Channing started working as a male stripper using the name Chan Crawford. I think he should have stuck with this, both the name and the career. More job security. But a severe bout of gonorrhea left him gun-shy about swinging his junk in front of southern floozies. In Florida he fell into modeling and at some point moved to Los Angeles.
Tatum became a fan of TBSB when he saw us play at a gig downtown. He showed up with his entourage which consisted of 17 girls named Roxy and one pale guy dressed in spandex. He got up and danced with the girls and continued to do so long after we'd left. He says his favorite song of ours is, "...that one with the beat. It's got a really cool beat."
We thank Channing for becoming a fan and hope that some day he'll make it in his chosen profession, though if it doesn't work out, there's always that male stripping thing to fall back on.
