Creative people are destined to create. Not administrate, pontificate or procrastinate, but create. Their minds think very differently than those of an engineer. Thoughts float to them, as they do to us all, but the artistic person recognizes that thought was born to be a song or a story. As the artist walks the streets of their village they see what others do not.
It was a cool March morning as I strolled home from walking my daughter to school when I came upon a little man who was watering his grass. What struck me about this grandpa was the pride he had for his lush green carpet. I couldn't help but to compliment him on his beautiful lawn. His demeanor was elevated immediately as if he had been waiting for someone to notice. I walked away slowly relishing in the thought that it wasn't even 8am yet and I had helped make someone's day better.
Since my attention had been diverted to grass I found myself looking at the ground as I headed home. When all of a sudden I saw something you don't see every day; a fresh new tea bag laying on the parkway of a neighbor's lawn.
Every tea bag has a story. The fragrant herbs nestled in that pouch may have had their beginnings on top of the Himalayas like the Darjeeling tea that only has a two-week time frame to get harvested. Because of the limited time this tea has on this mountain top, it is consider more valuable. The rich elements that make up this tea cause people to take notice. One never knows where that delicious pouch may end up; the Four Seasons in New York, the Ritz in LA or the Walnut Room in Chicago. Every tea bag has a destination, but it's not until it get thrusts into hot water that it's real purpose pours forth.
So it is with artists, musicians and performers alike. We were born in a season of song, an era of art and design, and some with limited time. But it's not until that creative personality has been stripped of the warmth of the sun they received on their mountain top and squeezed into an unfamiliar place where they begin to see elements of themselves they've not yet known. The moment of truth comes when they are left with nothing but the hot water set before them. As they slide into the steam to be steeped they realize this moment was designed for them to have their delicious creation come forth. Everything they are made of, every gift that they possess will be drawn out of them for the world to drink of their magic, their music, their muse.
Frequently we look at the challenges in life as an attack that has come to get us off track or kick us out of the game. When in reality hard times are designed to get us out of our comfort zone. It is the catalyst that causes the cream of those creative juices to rise to the top. It's when we have lost a friend, a business deal or dream that we find out who we really are and what we are truly capable of. Our days on the mountain top will always be limited, but it's what we do when the squeeze is on and the heat is scorching our soul that counts.
