There are various things in life that strike a chord of fear in most people. The fear of death, the fear of public speaking and the fear of getting hurt...again. May I offer you a phrase to consider for your own battle cry to seize growth and fulfillment? This is the year to confront your fears!

Relational fears can cause a lot of anxiety, but once we recognize what we are dealing with we have just won half the battle. Fear operates in the dark and torments the mind. Staying in fear clouds our vision and perspective but when we choose to shine the light on the issue we then discover that it actually loses it's hold on us.

The Trust Factor

If we wish to enjoy any sort of a relationship from casual to serious, trust is one of the main elements. If there is no trust there is no hope. Some people have difficulty trusting themselves. Perhaps they have screwed up relationally before and continue to project that same outcome for their future, so they are afraid to get involved at all. Let this be the season to forgive yourself for all the mistakes and embrace the good things that are ahead. Making an effort to believe in yourself again will draw others to you who may end up being your most precious peeps.

Fear of Intimacy

If you have been wounded, (like who hasn't) intimacy can be a place we tend to steer far away from. No one wants to be hurt let alone hurt again and left in the gutter. The best move we can make when this has happened is to step back and allow the wounds to heal. How do we do this? By choosing to be grateful. Grateful? Are you kidding me? You have no idea what that jerk did to me! While the pain that person inflicted may be raw, we can still be thankful for the lessons learned from the one who caused the pain. There was something about the interaction with them that taught you lessons about yourself. Did the relationship give you any new perspectives on life? Did you come out of your shell or need to be bold in confrontations? Did you discover a side of you that you did not know before? Whatever it is, there is always something to learn from a less than favorable encounter. Focus on the lessons and make a decision to be free from fear in order to live a happy life. After all the best revenge is living well!

Fear of Commitment

The most fulfilled people in the world are those who have committed themselves to a goal, a project, an idea, invention or the life they desire to live. Floating around in La La Land waiting for something good to happen is not reality. Healthy relationships are goal oriented. If you allow fear to squash your ability to truly communicate your heart you will only short circuit your ability to live true to your own self. If you want to enjoy relationships and have people love you for who you truly are, then it's time to tackle the delusion that you can't let them see your flaws. Decide today that you are first committed to be true to yourself and then you will see doors of opportunity open up that you never thought possible!

Fear is like a python designed to suffocate the life right out of you. Looking fear in the face and choosing to deal with it come hell or high water will do wonders for your self-esteem. People are not born afraid, it's something we learn along the way. Make this be your day to address the little things gnawing at your brain and strangling your ability to love. You will never get another chance to live life to the fullest. You may never have another crack at giving of yourself to the man or woman of your dreams. If you allow fear to have it's way with you, you will forever be on the sidelines wishing you knew how to get in the game. This is the year to confront your fears! What are you waiting for?
