Another Not-Useless Addition To Highland Park

So last weekend I was out of coffee and went down to check out Highland Cafe, a new breakfast joint on York between Ave. 50 and Ave. 51 - same block as The York, and same side of the street. The place is medium-sized, with a short menu of about 8 main choices for breakfast. You order at a counter and someone brings it to you at a table, so it's that half-casual type of setup.

I had the veggie omelette and my girlfriend had the bagel sandwich. Both were good, really fresh ingredients. The coffee was a bit acidic for my taste, but that may just be me. (I didn't check the brand but it tastes like the same stuff they have at Cafe de Leche and Auntie Em's - popular but a bit intense.)

The staff was friendly, service was prompt, and the vibe was comfortable once one jackass got off his cell phone. Only drawback for me was that the only bacon offered was turkey bacon. I can't get into that.

Overall I prefer Auntie Em's, but sometimes you just don't want to deal with the waitlist over there. It's great to have another breakfast place nearby, especially when you consider that most of the new places on York these days are either selling anime figurines or are some hybrid art studio/design showroom - not exactly stuff I need at the moment. Bagel sandwich was $6, omelette was $8, with 2 coffees & tip it ended up being about $24.
